Elder Fraud

As the population of our nation grows older, so does the average age of fraud victims. It is estimated that $40 billion is lost each year to telemarketers and, unfortunately, many of these victims are our senior citizens. Research shows that Americans aged 65 and older are the prime targets for scams and receive more mail and telephone solicitations than any other age group.

Everyday our office receives phone calls involving a trusting senior citizen who has lost his or her life savings to a con-artist. Although every scam reported to our office is investigated, education is the only way to protect yourself from becoming a victim of a scam. The Attorney General's Elder Fraud Prevention guide contains information on various scams such as telemarketing, mortgage, contractor and charity fraud that frequently target the elderly population.  A printable copy of the guide can be found on the resources section of this page.

To request copies of the brochure, or if you or a loved one has any questions or need further information on elder fraud protection, please contact the Consumer Protection Section of the Louisiana Attorney General’s Office at 1-800-351-4889.
