Attorney General Jeff Landry: Trump Revisions to Well Control Rule Are Responsive and Responsible

BATON ROUGE, LA – Today, the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement released key updates to the federal regulations covering blowout preventers and well control (the Well Control Rule) for oil, gas, and sulfur operations on the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS). Upon release, Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry issued the following statement:

“I have long said the most valuable resource in the Gulf of Mexico is not the oil and gas underneath the waters, but rather it is the men and women who ply their trades there. And the safety of our neighbors who are working in the Gulf to deliver the energy we need to create jobs and fuel our economy is paramount.

So today, I applaud the Trump Administration for ensuring the safety of our workers and our coast while encouraging increased domestic exploration and production. I am grateful they have been able to remove unnecessary regulatory burdens without ignoring or contradicting safety measures recommended after the Deepwater Horizon tragedy.

The revisions to the Well Control Rule represent responsive and responsible administrative action. For generations, Louisiana and her coast have shared a close relationship with oil and gas companies conducting projects on the OCS. We understand that any unnecessary regulatory burden will not only cost operators dollars and cents, but could also cost Louisiana families the food on their tables.

I thank the Trump Administration for putting a strong emphasis on evidence and performance-based directives, which grant the ability to adapt activities to the particular conditions found at each drill site. I trust these sensible changes will further protect workers and energize an industry critical to the security and stability of our Nation.”
