Lawmakers for Bipartisan Support to Protect Patients with Pre-Existing
Conditions with a Guaranteed Benefits Pool
BATON ROUGE, LA – Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry issued the following statement praising the Louisiana Senate for passing SB 173 - the Health Care Coverage for Louisiana Families Protection Act, a bill aimed to protect preexisting healthcare conditions and provide other patient protections should appellate courts uphold the district ruling that the Affordable Care Act as unconstitutional. The Legislation would create a Guaranteed Benefits Pool to accomplish these goals:
“In a loud, overwhelming manner – the Louisiana Senate declared our State should protect patients, ensure coverage of preexisting conditions, guarantee coverage for essential benefits, and assure a robust marketplace for affordable healthcare with choices for the people of Louisiana. By creating a Guaranteed Benefits Pool, modeled on the success of other states, we can accomplish these goals and help lower healthcare premiums for Louisiana citizens. By working together – Louisiana is leading the Nation in crafting a constitutionally-sound, state-based solution to protect people with pre-existing healthcare conditions and lower cost of premiums to make healthcare more affordable. This plan was modeled, in part, after a Maine initiative that saved individuals in their 60s more than $7000 per year; we hope, and expect, to see similar premium reductions here. I am optimistic the Louisiana House of Representatives will follow the Senate’s lead, put politics aside, and unify in this plan to protect our State’s patients.”
SB 173 unanimously passed the bipartisan Senate Health and Welfare Committee last week. It passed the full Senate today by a vote of 39-0.
