Identity Theft, Home Repair Scams, Phony Emergency Response Officials, Fake Charities, and Other Elder Fraud Addressed at Town Hall Today

BATON ROUGE, LA – Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry and Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) Acting Director Mick Mulvaney today hosted a town hall focused on protecting Louisiana’s elderly from financial exploitation.

General Landry and Director Mulvaney participated in a lively discussion with attendees and panelists from community groups, industry, and state partners. Leaders from the Better Business Bureau, the Louisiana Bankers Association, AARP, and local and state governments educated the public on common types of elder fraud and gave tips on how to prevent it.

“It is absolutely despicable to take advantage of our elderly family, friends, and neighbors,” said General Landry. “This is why my office is on the front lines investigating, arresting, and educating to help stop the awful occurrence of seniors being targeted and preyed upon by scammers.”

“Hearing and listening to consumers in their own communities is critical to ensuring the Bureau fulfills its mission,” said CFPB Acting Director Mick Mulvaney. I’m grateful to General Landry for co-hosting and organizing this town hall to achieve just that goal.”

“With research showing Americans aged 65 and older are the prime targets of scams and millions of older Americans having their financial security ruined by scammers, I am extremely grateful Director Mulvaney and his agency chose to do this very important town hall in Baton Rouge,” added General Landry. “My office and I will utilize the valuable information shared today in our future outreach programs.”
