President Biden’s unlawful LNG ban has now hit Ukraine in the middle of its war with Russia.

Ukraine struck a major LNG deal with Virginia-based Venture Global, which has multiple facilities in Louisiana. 

This deal with Venture Global’s Plaquemines facility would allow Ukraine to purchase up to two million metric tons of gas each year to power the country, and bring millions of dollars of revenue into the American economy. The Wall Street Journal recently recognized the global threat created by this ban and its importance to Ukraine.

The whole Venture Global agreement is in peril, because of Mr. Biden’s unlawful LNG permitting “pause,” which stopped cold permitting for all new LNG export permits to countries without a Free Trade Agreement with the United States - that includes Ukraine.

In March, Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill led a coalition of 16 states in a lawsuit against the President and the United States Department of Energy over this decision to ban new liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports. That suit would let us get back to the business of supplying the power needs of countries around the world who will otherwise seek to meet their demand from Russia, the Middle East, or China.

This new reporting highlights what General Murrill has said all along: The Biden administration’s reckless environmental agenda hurts the United States ability to protect itself and will only embolden Russia, China, and Iran.

 “Joe Biden’s assault on American energy threatens Louisiana and democracy itself worldwide. It creates international instability and hurts developing democracies like Ukraine. Joe Biden has repeatedly stated that he stands with Ukraine, but this LNG ban directly contradicts his empty statements. He has emboldened Russia in its quest to defeat Ukraine. This ban has been unlawful since the beginning, and now we’re seeing the direct result of these disastrous environmental policies,” said General Murrill.

Last week, the Louisiana Department of Justice presented our case to get this LNG export ban lifted immediately in front of the U.S. District Court Judge James Cain, and we are hopeful the judge will rule in our favor soon. The State of Louisiana is joined by the States of Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, West Virginia, and Wyoming.
