Fugitive from Claiborne Parish sentenced after more than three decades on the run

A Bienville Parish man who was on the run for 32 years was sentenced for a shooting in Ringgold, Louisiana.

On Thursday, July 18, a judge in Claiborne Parish sentenced Greg Lawson to 45 years with the Louisiana Department of Corrections without the benefit of parole.

Attorney General Liz Murrill’s Office prosecuted the case.

64-year-old Lawson was captured in Mexico in September of 2023, after the FBI New Orleans received a tip. Lawson was accused of trying to shoot Seth Garlington after a dispute at a gas station in 1991. But Lawson absconded from the court jurisdiction during jury deliberations for his attempted second degree murder charge.

This is video from FBI New Orleans which captures Lawson being taken into custody last year by authorities.

“The sentencing of this defendant is a testament of the commitment of our office to seek justice for crime victims no matter the length of time. This victim will finally get justice after more than three decades,” said Attorney General Liz Murrill.
