After consultation with the Governor, Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill has ordered the Louisiana Bureau of Investigation (LBI) to open a full review of security plans from New Year’s Eve and the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans. The review follows the January 1, 2025 terrorist attack which tragically took the lives of fourteen people and critically injured over two dozen more.

The Attorney General’s review is anticipated to explore all aspects of the planning for and execution of security measures in the City of New Orleans for New Year’s Eve and the Sugar Bowl, including: 

• Existing security assessments & recommendations
• Funding sources and the use of state, federal, and local funding for security measures
• Assets & allocations
• Operational failures
• State/Local/Federal coordination 

“The People of Louisiana deserve answers. We are committed to getting a full and complete picture of what was done or not done, and more importantly, what needs to change so we can prevent this from ever happening again,” said General Murrill.  “I have spoken to Chief Anne Kirkpatrick and she has pledged complete support and cooperation with this review. I have also spoken to City Council President Helena Moreno, District Attorney Jason Williams, New Orleans Inspector General Edward Michel, and Councilman Freddie King who have all pledged their complete support as well. I will continue to call on other leadership in the state and the community in the next few days.” 

“The men and women of the New Orleans Police Department put their lives on the line for us every single day,” General Murrill continued. “It was through their bravery and quick action that this evil & cowardly terrorist was terminated before more lives were lost. It’s my hope that our findings will help provide our law enforcement officers and the City of New Orleans with the tools and insight they need to best ensure the safety of the community and our many visitors.”
